Save our special schools

On Tuesday 27th March, hundreds of parents, children, staff and trade unionists rallied in opposition to the proposal to close seven special needs schools across Belfast and merge them into three super schools. Parents had made their own posters and banners, many with images of their own children, with slogans such as ‘Save My School’ and ‘Not all children have voices, but they have choices’.

On 30th March this year, Land Day protests took place to commemorate the Palestinian people who were killed on that date in 1976 and demand an end to the siege of Gaza by Israel and Egypt. This was the start of a series of planned protests leading up to the 15th May which aims to see a million march to mark the seventieth anniversary of the Nakba (disaster), the forced expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homes which laid the basis for the establishment of the Israeli state.

In a show of cross-community, working-class unity, leisure centre workers from the Shankill Road and Falls Road, trade unionists and people from across Belfast came together to protest the declining working conditions and plans which threaten forty-nine jobs that have arisen since the takeover of Belfast’s leisure centres by Greenwich Leisure Limited.

The latest blow saw Amber Rudd forced to step down as Home Secretary in the wake of the Windrush scandal, which saw British Afro-Caribbean people who came to the UK decades ago as children denied benefits and services and even threatened with deportation.
