Swedish school student Greta Thunberg, on 20 August 2018, decided not to attend school until the general election on 9 September, after heatwaves and wildfires in the country. Every Friday since, she has protested outside the parliament against the government’s inaction on climate change.

Climate change poses a real and current threat to human existence. In recent years we have seen rising sea levels and a rise in the number of extreme weather events.
While Trump’s climate change denial is now close to unique among world leaders, capitalism is fundamentally incapable of dealing with this crisis, as profit – the system’s motor force – must come before all else. Based as it is upon competition between corporations and nation states for profits and dominance, it is incapable of realising the co-ordinated, structural transformation in our economy and infrastructure needed, particularly serious action to end our reliance upon fossil fuels.
In a show of cross-community, working-class unity, leisure centre workers from the Shankill Road and Falls Road, trade unionists and people from across Belfast came together to protest the declining working conditions and plans which threaten forty-nine jobs that have arisen since the takeover of Belfast’s leisure centres by Greenwich Leisure Limited.
